The Opportunity

The purpose of Neighborhood Bingo is to promote social and community cohesion among millennials in Seattle. Our team wanted to design an app that would get people out of their house and interacting in real life with their neighborhood and neighbors.

Potential Obstacles

  • Game interface/design/rules
  • Making the game easy to learn and use
  • Making the game FUN
  • Making the game beneficial to the user

To solve for these potential obstacles our team interviewed five Seattle residents to gather data about user feelings regarding three major topics: neighborhoods, meeting people and gaming habits.

Primary Persona

Design

Our team decided on key design features that would address potential obstacles and solve for our persona's needs/goals.

Key Features

  • Onboarding Walkthrough Tutorial
  • Casual Tone
  • Fun content
  • Virtual Economy
  • Rewards System

Design Ideation

I took ownership of the game onboarding process and the photo upload portion of our game experience. I was especially interested in the onboarding process, because we needed to be able to teach new users what the game was about, how to play it and why they should play it. But even though our team split up responsibilities for specific user flows to wireframe, we all contributed ideas and feedback to all aspects of the game

Usability Testing

Usability testing uncovered some key issues with our initial design. To guide the direction of our second, higher fidelity prototype, we created and prioritized a list of revisions that would attempt to solve our initial usability issues. Some examples of our usability testing findings and iterations can be seen in the images below.

Conclusion

The end result of our team's work was a mobile bingo game where users filled their bingo squares by experiencing different activities in their neighborhood. The game format would provide rewards to further motivate our persona to keep playing while providing features to address their needs, goals and barriers.

Usability testing revealed a marked improvement from v1 to v2, along with a high level of interest and excitement in Neighborhood Bingo. Notable delight was observed in regards to the "fun" aspects of the game, such as Ferdinand the Frenchie, the mascot of the game that celebrates achievements and that users can buy "swag" for.

Next steps:

  • Scaling to other neighborhoods and cities
  • Creation of additional game "mascots" to buy swag for
  • Additional usability testing and optimization of gameplay
