Easy Camper

Client: REI concept piece
Roles: Research, Ideation, UX/UI Design, and Usability Testing
Goal: Environmental stewardship & getting more people camping
Tools: Omnigraffle, Sketch, InVision

The Opportunity

A recent market research study regarding camping in the United States revealed that the overall number of camping participants went down by 4.2 million people compared to the previous year. Lack of time was cited as the main reason for research participants reducing their number of camping trips.

User research interviews and a variety of other research methods (card sorts, concept mapping, affinity diagramming, domain research) were conducted to get a better understanding of the current camping landscape and the primary persona that I would design the Easy Camper for.

Usability Testing

Overall, users found the site visually appealing, easy to navigate and fairly easy to accomplish the testing scenarios and tasks from the usability testing script. Issues that users expressed some confusion with included the packing widget, the placeholder text in the search bar and the secondary navigation on the user profile sub pages. These issues were addressed in subsequent iterations of the Easy Camper site.

CONCLUSION

The Easy Camper achieved its goal of helping users book, plan and coordinate camping trips. According to our primary persona, photos, reviews and campground information were vital factors when choosing campgrounds. The design for the Easy Camper included these features as well as  an interactive group packing list and a chat wall to address user pain points of planning and coordinating with friends.
